Cherry Picking
Before everyone and their mom had a podcast, I started one called Cherry Picking from my grad school apartment in 2017. It was an opportunity to tell stories in what was an exciting new medium for me, practice talking into a microphone, flex some different creative muscles, and connect and learn from guests I had on.
Below is a collection of some of my favorite episodes.
Welcome to Cherry Picking.
In this episode, I explain why I started the podcast, what I’m hoping to accomplish with it, and share how I came up with the name “Cherry Picking.”
The Perennial Benchwarmer.
Technically this is not an episode of Cherry Picking, but instead a project for my Audio Reporting class I took in my second quarter at Northwestern. At the time I was covering a girls high school basketball team, and this is a story about a player on the bench, with a unique perspective on her role on the team.
Jersey Chasing.
While I was in Houston for Super Bowl LI, I was overwhelmed by the variety of jerseys I saw repped at the NFL Experience. So I went up to people to ask who they were wearing and why. Some answers were confounding or sweet, but mostly they were a lot of fun.
eSports and Michigan-Ohio State.
This episode is an interview with my Medill classmate, Yifan. She expertly explains video games and eSports, a huge cultural blindspot, to me and we talk about our inherited rivalry as Michigan and Ohio State alums.
The Protest Down The Street.
I stumbled upon a student protest walking in my neighborhood, so I talked to the kids about why and what they’re protesting. I was moved by their action, thoughtfulness, and points of view.
